This easy-to-care-for plant is great for those who are apartment dwellers or prefer low maintenance greenery. It can even make the perfect table centrepiece!

Here’s how to create the perfect DIY Terrarium:

Choose your location

One of the crucial parts of creating a DIY is choosing a prime location. The types of plants that you select should be dependent on the location that you are aiming to pop your terrarium in. Succulents? Opt for a sunny place near the window. Indoor plants?

The shade is best. The possibilities are endless and terrariums are great for those who don’t want the commitment of a bigger indoor plant.

Now, choose your container.

If you’re wanting a closed terrarium, plants that can withstand humidity are great – we offer some hearty terrarium plants via our online store.  Aim to pair similar plants in your terrarium together, like fern and moss, as they require similar watering times and sunshine. If you don’t, plants may become overwatered or underwatered if they require different timings.

The best bit is next – layer your DIY Terrarium!

  • For the first layer, add in some charcoal as the base. Charcoal is great for absorbing moisture and excess water, allowing an all-round healthier plant. Around one tenth of your container for the charcoal is sufficient.
  • Next, add your soil. Dependant on the types of plants that you are using in your terrarium, aim for moisture-rich soil, made for your type of plants – succulent soil for succulents, peatmoss soil for indoor plants.
  • Once you have chosen your soil, pack it tightly into the dome in your container – this allows you to create a tightly packed terrarium and means there’s room for decoration.
  • Now, it’s time to plant! Make sure you dig a small hole to fit the roots of your plants, and when re-potting, check that all the soil is loose from the plant roots before placing them in your terrarium. If you have excess roots on your plants, lightly trim them away.
  • Finally, protect your terrarium and the soil with stones and moss, surrounding your chosen plants – this acts as a filter when watering them.
